There are two things to consider when planning a fireworks display, the amount of space that you have to launch your fireworks and your budget. One thing to consider no matter what, is whether or not you have any houses, trees or other objects located close by. If so, Z and Fan shaped cakes (ones that shoot out at an angle) may not be suitable for your location. Also, be sure to check with laws regarding setting off fireworks in your location. Michigan, Ohio and other states have their own individual fireworks laws.

When shooting fireworks without much room and or a low budget, 200 gram firework cakes are a great way to get a spectacular show without spending a lot of money. 200 gram cakes will shoot 50 to 70 feet in the air and provide between 9 and 96 breaks. These cakes are great for small areas.
Another nice way to stretch your fireworks budget is to use reloadable artillery shells. Small Festival Balls are a big seller and provide 6 shots which can be fired individually. Using reloadable in your fireworks display is a great way to extend the length of your show.
If you want to outdo the neighbors, using 500 gram cakes, 9 on a boards (NOAB) and high power reloadables like the Kiss of Death are the way to go. NOABs are show quality fireworks displays with a big boom and huge breaks. The 500 gram cakes are a show in and of themselves. Simply light one wick and get anywhere from 10 to 192 aerial shots.
The above types of products are great for large areas or when setting off your fireworks from a distance. They look especially spectacular when setting off the fireworks over a lake.
